CAC and PIV Authentication

The Department of Defense (DoD) is transitioning the certificates on the CAC card from CAC to PIV. This regulatory compliance mandate is called CAC Modernization.

It is important to understand that Lexmark CAC-enabled multifunction devices can support the PIV certificate. There are some necessary steps that the admin personnel must take in order to prepare the Lexmark mutifunction devices (MFDs).

Information and asset security is essential in every branch, department and office of the government. That’s why Lexmark offers two types of authentication solutions that are compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards for CAC and HSPD-12 PIV cards to help protect your valuable resources.

Lexmark’s Common Access Card (CAC) and Personal Identification Verification (PIV) authentication solutions provide safe workflow processes throughout your operations—by giving you more control over the security of networked Lexmark multifunction products (MFPs).

Our solutions ensure that only authorized employees or contractors may access the network through its MFPs, giving government agencies another option for enhanced network security protection. Users cannot initiate workflow processes at locked MFPs without first inserting a CAC or PIV card and obtaining authentication. Since the user’s identification is associated with all functions initiated while the card is in the reader, an audit trail may also be created to track user activity.

When integrated with Lexmark’s Print Management solution and a feature called secure Print Release, additional security and improved workflow efficiency are provided. Users send print jobs from anywhere and then release them for printing whenever it’s convenient by simply swiping their ID card and then selecting the documents they need to print, protecting confidential information and reducing unnecessary waste.
